Trip Details
In the 5-day Salkantay Trek, we offer two return options to Cusco after visiting Machu Picchu: return by train or by car. Below, you can find the details of each option. When making your reservation, you will be asked which option you prefer, and the price will vary depending on your choice.
In the 5-day Salkantay tour to Machu Picchu, we offer two options for your return to Cusco after visiting Machu Picchu: returning by train or by car. The price difference between the two options is $70, with the train return being more expensive.
Return by train:
After visiting Machu Picchu on the last day of the trek, you will need to return to the town of Aguas Calientes. You can do this either by walking, which takes approximately one hour, or by bus, which takes about 30 minutes and costs $12.
Once in Aguas Calientes, you will take the train around 3 p.m. heading to Ollantaytambo, a journey that lasts approximately 1.5 hours. In Ollantaytambo, a transfer will be waiting for you with your name to take you by bus back to Cusco, which will take about another 2 hours. In summary, the return trip by train from Aguas Calientes to Cusco takes approximately 3.5 hours.
Return by Car:
The return by car consists of the following: After visiting Machu Picchu, you will need to walk from Machu Picchu to Hidroeléctrica, which takes approximately 3 hours. The route includes a 40-minute downhill section, followed by a flat path.
You should arrive at Hidroeléctrica by 2:30 p.m., as this is the time to board the car, which departs at 3 p.m. The journey from Hidroeléctrica to Cusco takes between 6 to 7 hours. This option is the most economical way to return to Cusco.
ADDITIONAL OPTIONS YOU CAN ADD TO YOUR 5-DAY SALKANTAY TREK PACKAGE
On our booking platform, you will find additional options such as Wayna Picchu and Montaña Machupicchu. These are two peaks located within Machu Picchu, and if you wish to do some extra hiking, you can add one of these mountains to your package. The hike to either peak takes between 2 to 4 hours for a round trip. If you want to include this option, please make sure to reserve it at the time of booking your Salkantay trek.
If you do not wish to undertake additional hikes after visiting Machu Picchu, there is no need to add these options, as tickets to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu are included in the price of the Salkantay trek, which is provided by PERU ANDEAN TRIPS.
We also offer other options, such as the Vistadome train, a panoramic train that incurs an additional cost of $35. The type of train included in our standard return option is the Expedition or Voyager train. However, if you prefer the Vistadome or panoramic train, you can upgrade for an additional $35.
Additionally, you can rent sleeping bags and trekking poles, which can be added during the booking process. If you prefer, you can also rent them upon your arrival in Cusco at our office.
